Motivation As the Key to a Successful Manager


As a manager, it is your responsibility to get the job done through the work of others. No longer are you in the position of a doer, you must now delegate tasks and must play the role of the person in charge. You must utilize the skills, techniques, and abilities that you have acquired through years on the job in a way that will inspire your employees to accomplish the task at hand. Through the use of different forms of motivation, a manager can successfully maintain his employees, have quality production and achieve the goals of his or her company.
Incentives
It is shown that people are more inclined to act if they are going to receive an extra benefit. This is something that a manager can make the most of when it comes to any task. By using incentives to motivate your employees, they will be inspired to put forth their best effort in order to obtain the incentive that you are offering. A key factor in having this type of motivation work is to offer a reward that your employees want. Get their feedback and input to find out something that they would like to receive as a reward for their work.
Employee Autonomy
Giving an employee control over certain aspects of their work-life is a surefire way to motivate an employee to complete a task to their best ability. Many managers make the mistake of not allowing their employees to make decisions when it comes to the roles they will play in the growth and prosperity of the organization. Granting your employees the opportunity to understand the concepts you are trying to relay and allowing them to find their own niche' in the grand scheme of the company is a key motivation tactic.
Promotions and Competition
The other side of job enrichment is job enlargement, increasing the amount of work given to an employee. A primary example of this is giving a promotion. Everyone loves seeing their hard work eventually pay off, and the best way to showcase an employee's skills and abilities is to promote him or her for the job that they have done. Studies have shown that when a promotion is available in any certain field, the amount of work productivity increases in an effort for the employees to obtain the promotion. This type of motivation also creates a secondary motivator in the form of worker competition. Friendly competitions at between employees in work can increase the job performance but must be used carefully. If a competition gets out of hand, the entire company could suffer a downturn in productivity because of the conflict.
Job Enrichment
Having a sense of pride in the job that you do is vital to any venture undertaken at work. As a manager, it is your duty to make your employees feel like their work is important. By doing little things such as maintaining proper communication between management and the employees, encouraging and inspiring employee autonomy, providing necessary amounts of recognition of employee success, and using techniques like job sharing are all examples of job enrichment that can motivate employees to action in a positive manner.
